How to make 饺子

When we are talking about Chinese food other than chicken chow mein, the next thing that comes to mind would be Chinese dumplings.

There are different types of dumplings along with different types of meat and vegetable fillings.

Dumplings in Chinese is 饺子 (jiǎo zi)

We will show you different techniques as to how you can wrap a 饺子! It’s actually pretty simple and something you can add your own twist to! It’s also a good group activity, so grab your family and friends and give it a try.

(All folding techniques involves: Dumpling dough, filling of your choice and water)

Let’s begin with the simplest, involving two folds.

  1. Place filling in the centre of dough
  2. Fold the dough across the centre, leaving a small opening.
  3. Apply a small smear of water on the small opening
  4. Bring the other side of the dough over the first fold and use the water to ‘glue’ the two layers together.

Now, let’s move onto a triangle fold:

  1. Place filling in the centre of the dough
  2. Apply a smear of water around the circumference of the dough
  3. Bring three sides of the dough to the top of the filling, forming a pyramid shape
  4. Seal the sides together with the water

Finally, let’s learn to fold the traditional shape of Chinese dumplings!

  1. Place filling in the centre of the dough
  2. Apply a smear of water around the circumference of the dough
  3. Bring the two sides of the dough to the top, sealing the dumpling
  4. Gently press the sealed edge to make sure the water is ‘sticking’ the dough piece
  5. (Optional: The fold pattern just makes the water stick better, but it is not necessary)

Once you have made your dumpling shapes, place them into boiling water for 3-5 minutes to cook.
