IB Chinese May 2017 Paper 1 Full Review: Part 4

In this blog, we’ll look at the answers to the final questions in passage 4.

A question like this outlines a sentence and the pronoun in that specific sentence, and we have to identify which individual or group the pronoun refers to. For example, let’s look at line 2 in part 1 to answer Question 32.

Let’s look at the sentence: “你们很多人一定都会收到餐厅向派发的‘封手机带,让他们用膳时绑在手机上,提醒自己”用膳不用机.” “派发” means to distribute, “封手机带” means phone strap, “用膳” means meals and “绑在手机上” means to “tie on the phone.” Therefore, the entire sentence translates “many of you will definitely have received the phone straps distributed to diners by the restaurant, letting them tie it onto phones during meals.” We can see that the “them” or the “他们” refers to the diners or the “食客” as the action of strapping phones is the action of the diners. Hence, the answer to Question 32 is “时刻。”

Let’s look at line 4:

The sentence is “我们特别采访了香港青少年服务处的陈主任谈谈为什么会发起这个活动。以下是他的回答。” The sentence translates to “We specially interviewed Director Chen of the Hong Kong Youth Service to discuss why they issued this activity. The following is his responses.” Therefore, as the answers are Director Chen’s, the “他” refers to “陈主任.” That is the answer to Question 32.

Let’s move on to the next question, which is to match the sentence with the correct ending:

A question like this wants us to identify what percentage of people fall into a particular group by reading the passage (specifically part 2). Before we proceed to read the passage, there are some keywords that might be useful to know:

智能手机zhì néng shǒu jī – Smart Phone

上瘾 shàng yǐn – Addiction

Let’s look at the passage!

Let’s look at the first option: “超过八成受访者指智能手机不可或缺.” “超过” means to exceed, “八成” means 80%, “缺” means to lack, and “不可或缺“ roughly translates to cannot be lacking – or indispensable. The overall sentence, therefore, means “over 80% of interviewees said smartphones were indispensable.” Therefore, Question 34 is best completed by Option A, as “80%以上“ means above 80%.

In the second sentence, “近三分之二受访学生“ translates to “almost 2 out of 3 interviewed students,” ”沉迷“ means to get addicted, ”平均“ means on average. Therefore, the bullet point translates to “almost 2 out of 3 interviewed students admitted to being addicted to smartphones, and on average checked their phone every half hour or less.” Therefore, as 2/3 is 66%, the option that best completes the sentence in Question 35 is option C.

In the final bullet point, “超过半数受访学生会因没带智能手机或手机元电而出现负面情绪,” “负面“ means negative and “情绪“ means emotion. Thus, the bullet point translates to “Over half the interviewed students said they would display negative emotions if they didn’t bring their smartphones or mobile phone. Therefore, the best answer to question 36 is option D.

Let’s look at part 3 of the passage:

You’ll have noticed from the previous exercise that the answers can actually be found in order in the passage. Since the answer to the example is in the first bullet point, we can assume that the answer to Question 37 can be found in the second bullet point. “近两成受访者更因此与人发生冲突” translates to “almost 20% of interviewees were more likely to experience conflicts with people.” The key word here is “冲突,” which means conflict and is the closest word to dispute, or “争执.“ The answer to 37 is, therefore “冲突.”

Let’s look at the next bullet point:

This translates to “more than 60% of people use smartphones to reduce phone calls and face to face communication.” The key word here is “减少,” which means reduce or decrease, and this is the closest synonym to the word in Question 38. Another way to come to this answer is to look at individual characters. For example, “低” means low, whereas “少“ means less, and so the words are similar. Always rely on your knowledge of Chinese characters to back you up in an exam!

Moving onto the next bullet point:

This translates to “forty percent of people said their interpersonal communication skills became rusty/out of practice.” The key word here is “生疏“ (shēngshū) which means “out of practice” or “rusty,” and therefore best corresponds to “unskilled.”

Finally, let’s look at the final question of the passage:

Question 40 is rather straightforward, asking you to respond to the question below. The key word in the question is “好处,” which translates to benefits or advantages. The question wants the student to find two advantages to the “用膳不用机” scheme. Let’s read the passage:

The final paragraph actually lists out the objectives of the scheme, which are to “改善人与人之间的沟通” (improve communication between individuals) and “珍惜与亲友相处时光” (cherish time between friends and family). Both of these objectives are beneficial to individuals, and they are therefore the two advantages of the scheme. These objectives can be written into the box provided as the answers.

That’s a wrap for May 2017 Paper 1!
