Take a look at this picture and guess which subject field this school specialises in!
Medicine? Engineering? Law?
Let’s look at another picture.
Still need help? Look at the bottom half of the picture.
That’s right! It is actually a soccer school! In fact, it is the largest in the world! Congratulations if you guessed correctly with the first photo!
But just like this soccer ball, you would assume that it is located somewhere in Europe or if not, on one of the Americas.
But in fact, it is the last place where you would expect it is:
The Evergrande Football School was established in 2012 and is located in Guangzhou, China. It has over 2,800 students and more than 50 football pitches!
Approximately 2 billion RMB ($299,010,000 USD) was invested into the school.
With that money, you can get approximately:
- 747,525,000 chicken nuggets
- 299,309 Iphone Xs
- 3761 Tesla Model S
After considering this fact, we can see that President Xi was not joking when he said he aims to transform China’s national soccer team into one of the strongest in the world.
In 2017, Beijing released a statement saying that they aim to increase its soccer-playing population to 50 million by 2020.
And at the heart of this whole operation: Evergrande Football School and its students
Children as young as 9 are told to join this boarding school and to focus on developing their soccer skills.
The whole school is football-crazy!
Depictions of international world-class players are hung all around the school and a 40 foot replica of the World Cup serves as an important centerpiece. All of which is done to constantly remind the students, teachers and players about their ultimate goal.
Currently, China is ranked 96th in the world for soccer, just above Qatar (Ironic, huh).
But with the school and country’s strong ambition, sooner or later, China will rise up the ranks with the help of the students of Evergrande Football School.
